Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Epping Recreation Reserve in Melbourne to commemorate the life of 27-year-old high school teacher and footballer Nathan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald, who tragically died following a head injury sustained during a football match. The community came together to honour a man remembered for his kindness, smile, and dedication to others.
Mr Fitzgerald, a teacher at Mernda Central P-12 College, was playing for the Epping Football and Netball Club reserves team against Lalor on July 4 when he clashed heads with another player. He subsequently hit his head on a concrete cricket pitch in the middle of the ground. He was hospitalised and passed away two days later.
At the memorial on Saturday afternoon, Epping Football Netball Club president Luke De Vincentis described the week as “shattering” for players, volunteers, and staff. “The boys, all the volunteers, all the staff at the club are heartbroken,” he said, noting the unifying effect of the tragedy on the community. Mr Fitzgerald was praised for his “massive smile that lights up every room” and his respect, courtesy, and community focus.
Mr Fitzgerald’s father, Gary Fitzgerald, addressed the crowd, emphasising the preciousness of life and the family’s strength through faith. A guard of honour was formed by teammates and opposing players. Flags flew at half-mast, and a banner read “Nathan Fitzgerald gone too soon #34 forever.” A GoFundMe for the family has raised over $147,000.
The incident has raised safety concerns regarding multi-use sports fields and concrete cricket pitches. WorkSafe is investigating, and club officials hope for improvements to mitigate risks. All clubs in round 18 will wear black armbands, and a minute’s silence will be observed before a Richmond-Melbourne match at the MCG, where Mr Fitzgerald’s teammates will be welcomed.
Mr Fitzgerald is survived by his parents Gary and Barbara, siblings Hannah, Matthew and Vanessa, and fiancée Hannah. He will be remembered for his loyalty, love of football, and positive impact on those around him.
