South African international footballer Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just two weeks after representing his country at the 2026 World Cup.

The South African Football Players Union confirmed the midfielder’s death on Saturday, describing his passing as a devastating and immeasurable loss for his family, teammates and the country’s football community.

Adams appeared in three matches during South Africa’s World Cup campaign in the United States, Canada and Mexico. His death was subsequently confirmed by his club, Mamelodi Sundowns, and South Africa’s Ministry of Sports, Arts and Culture.

The cause of his death has not been publicly confirmed.

The players’ union said Adams had represented South Africa with courage, pride and distinction at the tournament, carrying the expectations of millions of supporters.

It extended condolences to his family, the national team and his current and former clubs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC.

The union remembered Adams as a talented footballer and committed servant of the game whose life and career still held enormous potential.

Mamelodi Sundowns also issued a statement expressing profound sorrow over the death of the highly regarded Bafana Bafana midfielder.

The club’s chairman, directors, coaching staff, players, employees and supporters offered their sympathies to Adams’ relatives and friends.

Sundowns also asked that the family’s privacy be respected while they grieve.

South African Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie described Adams as one of the country’s brightest young football talents.

He said the nation was mourning alongside the player’s family, teammates and the supporters who had watched him develop from a promising academy prospect into a full international.

McKenzie urged the media and public not to speculate about the circumstances of Adams’ death while authorities and his family awaited confirmed information.

He said any official details would be released by the appropriate parties when available.

Adams played an important role in South Africa’s historic World Cup campaign.

He started the tournament-opening defeat against Mexico and remained in the starting team for the following draw with the Czech Republic.

The midfielder then appeared from the bench as South Africa defeated South Korea 1–0 in their final group match.

He was an unused substitute during the round-of-32 loss to Canada, which ended the national team’s campaign.

South Africa collected four points to finish second in Group A, advancing to the knockout rounds of a World Cup for the first time in the country’s history.

Adams’ performances helped make him part of a squad that achieved one of the most significant milestones in South African football.

At club level, he represented Mamelodi Sundowns, one of Africa’s most successful teams and the reigning CAF Champions League winners.

Adams joined Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC in January 2025 and went on to make 67 appearances for the club.

Thirty-seven of those appearances came during the 2025–26 season, underlining his growing importance to the team.

Sundowns had also competed at the previous Club World Cup in the United States and have secured qualification for the 2029 edition.

Tributes were also offered by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who said he was deeply saddened by the news.

Infantino extended condolences on behalf of FIFA and the global football community to Adams’ family, friends and teammates.

He said the Bafana Bafana and Sundowns midfielder would be greatly missed.

A moment of silence was observed before the World Cup quarter-final between England and Norway in recognition of Adams’ death.

Adams made his senior international debut for South Africa at the Africa Cup of Nations in January 2024.

He appeared twice as a substitute during the tournament as South Africa reached the semi-finals.

The midfielder earned nine senior international caps during his career.

His only international goal came in a 2–0 World Cup qualifying victory against Benin in March 2025.

Adams scored in the 84th minute after Lyle Foster had opened the scoring, helping South Africa progress toward the tournament where he would later represent his country on football’s biggest stage.

His death has prompted widespread mourning across South African and international football, with tributes recognising both his achievements and the potential of a career that ended far too soon.
