Mehidy Spins Through Australia’s Middle Order

Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz produced a superb display of spin bowling to dismantle Australia’s middle order, claiming five wickets during the first Test in Darwin.

Mehidy finished with impressive figures of 5-66 from 33.1 overs, applying sustained pressure as Australia attempted to recover in their second innings. His control, variation and ability to extract assistance from the surface proved difficult for the Australian batters to handle.

Among his important breakthroughs was Steve Smith, who became a major victim of Mehidy’s spell. Smith had looked relatively settled before Mehidy removed the experienced Australian batter, giving Bangladesh another crucial opening.

Mehidy continued to make an impact as Australia tried to rebuild, eventually completing his five-wicket haul and strengthening Bangladesh’s grip on the contest.

His bowling performance was particularly significant because Mehidy has historically enjoyed much of his Test success in subcontinental conditions. Producing a match-shaping spell on Australian soil demonstrated his ability to adapt his off-spin to different surfaces and conditions.

The five-wicket haul also completed an outstanding all-round contribution from Mehidy in Darwin. Earlier, he had scored a valuable 65 in Bangladesh’s first innings, helping the visitors reach 426 and establish a substantial advantage over Australia.

Mehidy’s performance ultimately played a major role in a historic Test for Bangladesh, who went on to defeat Australia by nine wickets, recording their first Test victory on Australian soil.
