Queensland’s coal industry has delivered a major economic contribution, generating $38.4 billion in direct spending and supporting more than 393,000 jobs across the state, according to a new industry report.

The inaugural Australia’s Annual Coal Report found that Queensland’s coal sector directly employed 31,789 full-time equivalent workers during the 2024–25 financial year while supporting thousands of contractors, suppliers and regional businesses connected to mining operations.

The report highlighted the industry’s strong impact beyond mine sites, with 8,236 local suppliers benefiting from coal-related activity across Queensland. Regional areas, particularly the Mackay–Isaac–Whitsunday region, recorded some of the largest economic benefits from coal investment and operations.

Coal Australia representatives said the sector remains a major contributor to regional employment, export income and government revenue. The report estimated that the national coal industry contributed $164.9 billion to Australia’s economy and generated almost $13 billion in taxes and royalties during the year.

The industry has continued to face debate over environmental concerns, energy transition policies and future demand for fossil fuels. Supporters argue coal remains essential for economic growth, steel production and regional livelihoods, while critics continue to push for faster movement towards cleaner energy alternatives.

Queensland’s resources sector is now navigating a changing global market, balancing strong export demand with increasing pressure to reduce emissions and diversify the state’s energy economy.
