Liverpool City Council has backed a proposal to create a new suburb around Australia’s new international airport. The proposed new suburb around Western Sydney International Airport will be called ‘Wianamatta’. The council says it is important to give the area a distinct identity to support rapid population growth, international connectivity and long-term economic potential.
Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoon says the airport-centric suburb is a key step in the future planning of Western Sydney. He says the area around the airport is fast becoming a major international hub and needs to be given a clear boundary and identity.
The name ‘Wianamatta’ has a deep connection to local Aboriginal culture and land. According to Mayor Mannoon, the name means ‘Mother Place’ and represents a direct cultural connection to the vast Aboriginal land that the airport is part of. The name has also been supported by the Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council (GLALC).
The name was proposed after discussions between GLALC, the Geographic Names Board, Western Sydney International Airport and Liverpool City Council. The name ‘Wianamatta’ was proposed based on these discussions.
Mayor Manun said the aim was to create a city and urban system that could be managed in a well-organized manner from the start of the airport. Currently, the airport area falls within the boundaries of multiple suburbs, which can be confusing for residents, businesses, emergency services, suppliers and visitors.

According to him, having a single suburb identity for the airport and surrounding area would make things like address identification, travel, emergency services and goods delivery easier, safer and more efficient.
The mayor added that the new airport is going to bring about a major change in the economy and urban life of Western Sydney. This will increase new jobs, investment and the region’s international profile. Therefore, the area surrounding the airport also needs to be well planned and defined for future growth.
After Liverpool City Council approved the proposal, it will now be sent to the Geographical Names Board. The board will decide whether to take the proposal to the next stage and open it for formal public consultation.
If the proposal is finally approved, ‘Wianamatta’ will emerge as a new and important suburb in western Sydney surrounding Australia’s new international airport, which could become one of the centers of airport-centric commerce, employment and urban expansion in the future.
