Shadow Finance Minister Jane Hume says it’s “too early” to speculate on who might lead the Coalition if Peter Dutton loses the election, telling ABC News Breakfast that it’s premature to talk leadership changes. When asked specifically whether Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor would be a potential successor, Hume responded with a vivid analogy: “You don’t read the entrails until you have gutted the chicken.”
She emphasized that the party would be fighting for every vote right up until polls close at 6:00 PM on election day.
Earlier in the week, Taylor appeared on Sky News, where he didn’t dismiss the possibility of seeking the Opposition Leader role if the Coalition fails to win. However, he insisted his primary goal is to replace Treasurer Jim Chalmers.
“He’s not capable. He’s out of his depth, he’s out of touch. We can do better,” Taylor said, arguing that Australia needs a treasurer with business experience and a clear understanding of investment and economic growth.
