Sydney commuters faced additional disruption on Tuesday afternoon when Metro train services between Barangaroo and Sydenham were suspended during peak hour.
A Sydney Metro spokesperson explained the issue stemmed from a fault with a pantograph—the component that connects the train to the overhead power lines.
While services continued to run northbound between Barangaroo and Tallawong, shuttle buses replaced trains on the southern route between Barangaroo and Sydenham from 4pm onward.
“Announcements are being made on trains and at stations,” the spokesperson said, adding that the affected train was undergoing troubleshooting.
According to Transport for NSW, services gradually returned to normal by around 7.30pm.
This incident added to a week of travel woes for Sydney commuters. On Monday, an emergency at Artarmon caused delays, following last week’s major disruption when a collapsed overhead wire halted services in the city’s west.
To address the recent frustrations, Premier Chris Minns approved free public transport on Monday as a goodwill measure.
“Commuters should allow us the opportunity to restore on-time performance and service efficiency,” Minns said. “We know the current situation is far from acceptable.”
