Spider-Man: Brand New Day is continuing its remarkable run at the North American box office, with the Sony and Marvel Studios blockbuster heading toward an estimated $65 million third weekend as The Odyssey prepares to move beyond the half-billion-dollar mark domestically.

The Tom Holland-led superhero film collected close to $19 million on Friday and is now expected to finish the weekend with roughly $65 million from 4,539 theatres. That would represent a decline of around 55% from the previous weekend while lifting its estimated domestic total to approximately $780.8 million.

The performance would also put Brand New Day among the strongest third weekends ever recorded at the domestic box office. Its projected $65 million would place it ahead of the $63.2 million third weekend achieved by Avengers: Endgame, although Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to hold the benchmark with $90.2 million.

The result is particularly notable for the 33rd weekend of the calendar year. With many American students returning to school, the late-summer period can present additional challenges for family-oriented releases. Even so, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to attract substantial audiences.

Before entering its third weekend, the film had already accumulated $715.8 million domestically after completing its second week with another $205.7 million. Its second-week performance surpassed the comparable $186.5 million earned by Avengers: Endgame, though it remained behind the enormous $261.1 million second week of The Force Awakens.

‘The Odyssey’ Continues Its Exceptional Run

While Spider-Man remains firmly in first place, Universal’s The Odyssey is demonstrating impressive staying power during its fifth weekend.

The film earned approximately $6.5 million on Friday and is projected to generate another $23 million over the weekend from 3,217 locations.

Even more impressive is the relatively modest decline of about 27% compared with the previous weekend, suggesting that audiences continue to turn out for the film well into its theatrical run.

By the end of Sunday, The Odyssey is projected to reach approximately $504.4 million at the domestic box office, pushing it beyond the significant $500 million milestone.

IMAX screenings remain an important part of the film’s theatrical performance, helping the epic maintain momentum despite several major new and continuing releases competing for audiences.

Two Dinosaur Movies Compete for Family Audiences

Family moviegoers have multiple options this weekend, creating an unusual battle between two dinosaur-themed releases.

Paramount and Spin Master’s PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie appears to be performing above initial expectations and could finish its domestic opening weekend at around $20 million.

The animated family release brought in approximately $7.1 million on Friday from 3,545 theatres and received an encouraging A CinemaScore from audiences.

That continues the franchise’s history of strong audience reactions. The 2023 sequel PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie also earned an A grade, while the original 2021 theatrical film received an A-.

The franchise’s newest instalment had already started its international rollout before arriving in North America, giving it an overseas foundation as it entered its domestic opening weekend.

‘The End of Oak Street’ Targets a Similar Opening

Warner Bros. and Bad Robot’s The End of Oak Street is competing directly for another portion of the weekend’s family and adventure audience.

Starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, the PG-13 film generated approximately $8 million on Friday from 3,446 locations and could also approach the $20 million range during its opening weekend, although some industry estimates place it slightly below that level.

The film earned a B CinemaScore, indicating a more moderate audience response than PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie.

Directed, written and produced by David Robert MitchellThe End of Oak Street follows a neighbourhood that unexpectedly finds itself bordering a prehistoric environment, bringing residents face-to-face with dinosaurs.

The film began its domestic rollout with roughly $2.5 million from Thursday preview screenings.

Its international campaign is also extensive, with major markets including Australia, France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, China and Japan forming part of its worldwide launch.

‘Six: The Musical Live’ and ‘The Brink of War’ Battle Further Down the Chart

Further down the weekend rankings, Six: The Musical Live and The Brink of War are competing for another position in the top five.

Focus Features’ release of Six: The Musical Live is projected to collect approximately $3 million across the three-day weekend after earning around $950,000 on Friday from 1,462 theatres.

Angel Studios’ The Brink of War, centred on the Reagan-Gorbachev era, is tracking close behind with an estimated weekend total of roughly $2.75 million.

The film collected about $1.2 million on Friday and received a strong A CinemaScore, suggesting positive reactions from its initial audience.

‘One Night Only’ Falls Sharply in Second Weekend

Universal’s One Night Only, meanwhile, is facing a considerably more difficult second weekend.

Playing in 3,012 theatres, the film is projected to earn approximately $2 million, representing a decline of around 64% from its opening frame.

Its Friday earnings were estimated at $600,000, with its cumulative domestic total expected to approach $9.9 million.

Spider-Man Remains the Dominant Force

Despite fresh competition, the weekend continues to belong overwhelmingly to Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

A third-weekend result around $65 million would underline the film’s extraordinary ability to maintain audience interest after its huge opening and second-week performance.

At the same time, The Odyssey crossing $500 million domestically adds another major success story to the summer box office, while the stronger-than-expected performance of PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie and the arrival of The End of Oak Street are providing additional options for family audiences.

With Brand New Day approaching $800 million domestically and The Odyssey moving beyond half a billion dollars, Hollywood’s late-summer box office remains powered by two exceptionally strong theatrical performers.
