The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards brought the 2025-26 television awards season to a close with a mixture of commanding victories, veteran triumphs and unexpected results, led by a remarkable breakthrough for Widow’s Bay.
The Apple TV comedy-horror series emerged as the night’s defining success story after entering the awards conversation relatively late. Across the Primetime and Creative Arts ceremonies, the series collected 14 Emmys and established itself as one of the year’s biggest television winners.
Elsewhere, Sally Field delivered one of the ceremony’s notable upsets, Rhea Seehorn finally converted years of acclaim into an Emmy victory, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert emerged from an unusual variety-series voting system as the category’s sole winner.
‘Widow’s Bay’ Becomes Comedy’s Breakout Emmy Powerhouse
Few television programs experienced a more dramatic awards-season rise than Widow’s Bay.
The series began rolling out near the end of April, leaving relatively little time before the Emmy eligibility deadline. Initially, it was not widely regarded as the dominant comedy contender.

By the end of the Emmy ceremonies, Widow’s Bay had accumulated 14 victories, more than any other program.

One significant comedy acting prize escaped the Widow’s Bay juggernaut — lead actress.
The series did not have a nominee in that category, opening the way for Jean Smart to win again for Hacks.
Smart’s victory gave the acclaimed performer another major milestone, with her Emmy success extending across every season of the HBO Max comedy.
Hacks had entered the race as one of the strongest contenders for outstanding comedy series, particularly as it approached the conclusion of its five-season run.
It also received 24 nominations, compared with 19 for Widow’s Bay.
But nomination strength was not enough to prevent the newer show from becoming voters’ preferred choice across many of the night’s biggest comedy races.

Several factors appear to have contributed to the sudden popularity of Widow’s Bay.
Its combination of comedy and horror arrived during a period of heightened audience interest in horror entertainment, giving the series a distinctive position among its competitors.
The program also offered Emmy voters something comparatively new in its storytelling, visual identity and ensemble.
That freshness may have helped it stand apart from established competitors whose characters and storylines had already been familiar to audiences for several seasons.
Recent Emmy history has also demonstrated voters’ willingness to reward emerging programs rather than automatically giving departing favourites a final victory.
For Widow’s Bay, those conditions combined to produce an awards-season surge few would have predicted when the show first appeared.
Stephen Root Wins First Emmy
Among the most warmly received results was Stephen Root’s victory for supporting actor in a comedy.
The veteran character actor defeated a field that included Harrison Ford for Shrinking.
Root’s win represented his first Emmy and added another major achievement to a career built around decades of television and film performances.
At 74, his victory also reportedly made him the oldest winner in the comedy supporting actor category.
The result meant another disappointment for Ford, who was nominated for a particularly well-received season of Shrinking but missed out on the award for a second consecutive year.
‘The Pitt’ Remains Powerful in Drama
While Widow’s Bay dominated comedy, The Pitt remained one of the central forces in the drama categories.
The HBO Max series returned after winning outstanding drama series and lead actor for Noah Wyle during the previous Emmy cycle.
Its second season received a commanding 25 nominations, making it the most nominated drama program.
That placed it comfortably ahead of competitors including Pluribus, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Slow Horses, The Gilded Age, The Diplomat, Paradise and Your Friends & Neighbors.
The Pitt ultimately retained two of its biggest prizes, again taking outstanding drama series while Wyle repeated his lead actor victory.
However, its large number of nominees may have worked against the show in some supporting categories.
Multiple ‘Pitt’ Nominees May Have Split Support
The Pitt occupied three of the eight supporting actor nomination slots and four of eight places in supporting actress.
Despite that strong representation, neither category went to the series.
Tom Pelphrey won supporting actor for HBO’s Task, while Allison Janney took supporting actress for Netflix’s The Diplomat.
Unlike The Pitt, both winning programs had only one contender in their respective categories, potentially allowing support to consolidate behind a single performance.
Janney’s victory was particularly significant, bringing her career Emmy acting total to eight.
That places her alongside Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus among the performers with the most acting Emmy victories.
Rhea Seehorn Finally Breaks Through

Rhea Seehorn won for the first season of Pluribus, defeating a field that included The Diplomat star Keri Russell.

HBO’s DTF St. Louis had already established momentum during the Creative Arts Emmys, where Steven Conrad won both directing and writing.
David Harbour received the supporting actor award and Linda Cardellini won supporting actress.
That momentum continued during the main ceremony when DTF St. Louis captured outstanding limited or anthology series.
It defeated major competitors including Netflix’s Beef and FX’s Love Story.
The Creative Arts results therefore proved to be a strong indication of how Television Academy voters were responding to the series.
Matthew Rhys Makes Emmy History
Matthew Rhys had an especially extraordinary evening.
In addition to winning lead comedy actor for Widow’s Bay, he collected another lead acting Emmy for Netflix’s The Beast in Me in the limited-series or movie field.
That achievement made Rhys the first performer to win multiple lead acting Emmy awards in the same year.
The double victory reinforced the scale of his presence across the 2025-26 television season, with recognition spanning two very different categories and projects.
Sally Field Delivers One of Night’s Biggest Upsets
Sally Field provided another memorable moment by winning for Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures.
Field entered a competitive field featuring Claire Danes for The Beast in Me, Sarah Snook for All Her Fault, Carey Mulligan for Beef and Sarah Pidgeon for Love Story.
Her victory stood out because Field was the veteran candidate in a category largely populated by younger competitors.
There was another important distinction: Remarkably Bright Creatures was a television movie, while her competitors represented limited series.
Performances from television movies have become comparatively uncommon among nominees in this category.
Field’s victory therefore demonstrated that a strong standalone movie performance can still overcome contenders backed by longer limited-series narratives.
It was the first time in 14 years that the category had reportedly been won by an actress nominated for a television movie performance.
Stephen Colbert’s Variety Victory Creates Voting Puzzle
One of the ceremony’s most unusual results came in the outstanding variety series category.
CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert emerged as the winner, but what made the result particularly interesting was that it was the category’s only winner.
The Television Academy changed the structure of the competition earlier in 2026 when talk and sketch programs were combined into a single category.
The category was also converted into an area award.
Instead of simply selecting one program over all competitors, voters were asked to determine whether individual nominees deserved Emmy recognition.
Under the system described for the category, programs reaching a 90 per cent approval threshold could receive awards, meaning multiple winners were theoretically possible.
If none reached that level, the program receiving the highest approval percentage would become the sole winner.
Yet only The Late Show ultimately received the Emmy.

The outcome was particularly striking because the category contained several programs with established Emmy support.
HBO’s Last Week Tonight has historically been a major awards favourite, while ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and NBC’s Saturday Night Live all maintain substantial profiles within the television industry.
The sole victory for The Late Show therefore leaves uncertainty about exactly how the voting broke down.
Either it was the only nominee to reach the required approval threshold, or none of the nominees reached it and Colbert’s program recorded the strongest overall support.
Whatever the explanation, the result became one of the most intriguing consequences of the Television Academy’s revised variety voting system.
2026 Emmys Reward Both Newcomers and Veterans
Taken as a whole, the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards demonstrated voters’ willingness to embrace fresh television while still recognising performers with decades of industry experience.
Widow’s Bay provided the night’s biggest breakout story, transforming from a late-arriving contender into the dominant comedy program with 14 overall victories.
At the same time, veterans including Sally Field, Jean Smart, Stephen Root and Allison Janney added significant new chapters to already distinguished careers.
Rhea Seehorn finally secured her first Emmy, while Matthew Rhys achieved an unprecedented double lead-acting victory.
Meanwhile, The Pitt demonstrated that even a heavily nominated returning champion can dominate some races while losing others when its own performers compete against one another.
And in variety television, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert produced a result that may continue to generate discussion about the Academy’s new voting structure.
With the 2025-26 awards season now complete, the biggest takeaway from the 2026 Emmys may be how quickly the television awards landscape can change. A program that was barely considered a major contender only months earlier ultimately walked away as the ceremony’s defining winner.
