Gunmen Open Fire on Tourists in Indian-Controlled Kashmir in Suspected Terror Attack

Gunmen have opened fire on a group of tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, leaving several people feared dead in what police are describing as a “terror attack.”

Authorities confirmed that multiple individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Security forces, including police and soldiers, quickly secured the area around Pahalgam, a well-known resort town in the predominantly Muslim region, which draws large numbers of visitors each year.

Reports indicate that the victims, mainly Indian nationals, had been visiting the popular Baisaran meadow, located about five kilometres from the town. The meadow is a major tourist draw, known for its scenic views of snow-covered mountains and dense pine forests.

Both India and Pakistan claim the Himalayan territory of Kashmir in its entirety, though each governs a portion of it.

Local police have attributed the attack to militants opposed to Indian administration in the region. An armed insurgency has claimed tens of thousands of lives since erupting in 1989, though violence has declined in recent years.
