Police report that a couple is safe after being rescued from their sinking vehicle at Bruny Island, a location frequented by both locals and tourists catching the daily ferry to mainland Tasmania.
Tasmania Police stated that the incident occurred around 10 a.m. at Roberts Point, North Bruny, when a vehicle with two occupants entered the water.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that as a ferry was departing the terminal, a Mitsubishi on the loading ramp drove off the dock and into the water,” police said.
Senior Sergeant Peter Borish expressed gratitude to a community member who quickly jumped into the water, broke a window of the car, and helped the elderly couple safely escape.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries have been reported. An investigation is currently underway, and WorkSafe has been notified.
Tasmania Police have advised the public to postpone any non-essential travel to and from the island while recovery efforts are carried out and the area is secured.
