Boyd Cordner and Matt King Emerge as Favourites to Replace Laurie Daley as NSW Blues Coach

Former NSW captain Boyd Cordner and current Blues assistant coach Matt King have emerged as leading candidates to replace Laurie Daley as head coach of the New South Wales State of Origin team if Daley steps away from the role.

Daley’s future has become a major talking point following reports that he is considering stepping down from the position after guiding NSW to a memorable 2026 State of Origin series victory. The veteran coach has indicated that he will address his future publicly, while speculation continues around the next generation of Blues leadership.

Cordner, a former NSW and Australian representative forward, has gained support due to his strong connection with the Blues program and his leadership experience during his playing career. His work in coaching pathways has also strengthened his credentials as a potential future Origin coach.

Matt King is also viewed as a strong contender after working closely within the NSW coaching setup. His experience as an assistant and his understanding of the Origin environment make him a natural candidate if officials choose continuity rather than an external appointment.

However, Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary remains a long-term option for NSW, with many viewing him as a potential future Blues leader due to his premiership success and coaching record. A move in the immediate future appears complicated because of his existing commitments with Penrith.

Other experienced coaches, including Michael Maguire and several former Origin figures, are also expected to be considered as NSW Rugby League weighs its next move.

The decision will shape the next era of NSW football, with officials balancing continuity, coaching experience and the need to maintain momentum after a successful Origin campaign.
