Four individuals have died following a tragic collision in Central Queensland on Sunday morning, bringing Queensland’s total road fatalities to nine since Friday.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:50 am on the Capricorn Highway between Blackwater and Comet, located in the Central Highlands region, approximately 230 kilometres west of Rockhampton.

The crash involved two vehicles, one carrying four occupants and the other carrying two, which collided and subsequently caught fire.

Queensland Ambulance Service provided emergency treatment to four individuals; unfortunately, all four died at the scene. Details regarding their age and gender have not yet been released by emergency services.

Two men, both in their twenties, sustained severe, life-threatening injuries—including significant chest and abdominal trauma—and were transported to Emerald Hospital for treatment.

Emergency response included five ambulance crews and two vehicles from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. The RACQ Capricorn Rescue Service helicopter was initially dispatched but later stood down.

Queensland Police indicated that further details could not be immediately provided due to the incident’s complexity.

On Sunday afternoon, the Capricorn Highway remained closed between Comet and Blackwater, with authorities establishing a 50-kilometre detour via Rileys Crossing Road and Blackwater Cooroorah Road, passing Bedford Weir. The detour route is unsuitable for heavy vehicles.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Since Friday, a total of nine people have lost their lives on Queensland roads, including three fatalities resulting from a separate head-on collision in Mackay on Friday night.
