Cricket Australia Confirms Charter Flight Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions

Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed it arranged a charter flight to transport Australian players from Pakistan to Dubai, following growing instability in the region and closed airports across Pakistan. The move was necessary as escalating tensions with India led to significant travel disruptions, making commercial departures nearly impossible.

CA explained that the charter was the only viable exit route as major airports remain shut. The suspension of both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) has further fueled uncertainty. While CA clarified that players participating in overseas franchise leagues manage their own travel, the organization emphasized its ongoing communication and support for their wellbeing.

“CA and the ACA are assisting, as you would expect, and have been in contact with all players,” said CA Media Advisor Cole Hitchcock. He added that most players are already en route to Australia or have arrived.

Six Australians are currently involved in the PSL, which has now relocated to Dubai. The list includes Matt Short, Ben Dwarshuis, Riley Meredith, David Warner, Ben McDermott, Ashton Turner, Mitchell Owen, Max Bryant, and Sean Abbott. The shift is expected to enable overseas players to finish the competition in a safer setting.

CA CEO Todd Greenberg reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to safety:
“The safety and welfare of our players and staff is always a core priority and we support today’s decision by the BCCI,” he said.

CA continues to coordinate closely with the Australian Government, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), maintaining open communication with players in both countries.

The decision to suspend tournaments followed an alarming incident in India, where air-raid sirens led to the evacuation of a stadium during a Punjab Kings match, coached by Ricky Ponting. Airports in key regions like Dharamsala and Chandigarh have been closed to civilian traffic since Wednesday, leaving cricketers stranded.

Australian stars affected include Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis, Mitch Marsh, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, and Xavier Bartlett, along with numerous staff and media representatives. The disruption may provide an unexpected break before the upcoming World Test Championship final in England and a tour of the West Indies.
