Holger Rune Upsets Carlos Alcaraz in Barcelona Open Final, Inspired by Djokovic’s Olympic Blueprint
Holger Rune has pulled off a stunning straight-sets victory over local favourite Carlos Alcaraz to claim the Barcelona Open title, marking his first tournament win since 2023 and his maiden ATP 500 trophy.
The 21-year-old Dane defeated the second-seeded Spaniard 7-6(6), 6-2, ending Alcaraz’s 14-match unbeaten run at the event and his red-hot streak on clay. It was Rune’s fifth career title and his first since winning in Munich two years ago.
“It means the world,” Rune said. “In the beginning, I was a little bit stressed because Carlos obviously plays big-time tennis. I had to breathe and find my rhythm. After he broke me, I got more into the match. The first set was a big battle—winning it was key to gaining momentum. I’m really proud of myself.”
Alcaraz, fresh off winning the Monte Carlo Masters and riding a 21-1 clay-court record since his French Open triumph last year, was looking to defend his Barcelona crown for a third time. But Rune, drawing tactical inspiration from Novak Djokovic’s victory over Alcaraz in the Paris Olympic final, had other plans.
“I told myself, ‘What did Novak do when he beat him?’” Rune explained. “I replayed that match in my head. I tried to adopt that style—make Carlos play a lot of balls. I’m happy with how I stayed composed and brave when it counted.”
Alcaraz, who needed treatment twice for an upper right leg issue, was unable to find his usual rhythm after narrowly losing the first set. Rune capitalized on the shift in momentum, dominating the second set to seal the win.
The final marked the first ATP tour-level title match between two players aged 21 or younger since 2022. After the match, Alcaraz reflected on their long-standing rivalry.
“We’ve been playing each other since we were 12,” Alcaraz said. “Time flies. I’m really happy to see us both in this position.”
With the loss, Alcaraz will drop to world No. 3, with Alexander Zverev overtaking him after claiming his third Munich title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over American Ben Shelton.
Meanwhile, Rune will re-enter the ATP top 10, climbing to world No. 9 as the clay-court season continues with the Madrid Open this week.
