An investigation is underway after a woman was fatally shot by police during a confrontation in South Melbourne on Saturday evening.
Police responded to reports of a man armed with a machete around 5pm on Cecil Street. While attempting to arrest the man, a vehicle struck one of the officers, pinning him against a wall.
In response, the officer discharged his firearm at the vehicle, hitting both the driver and a passenger. The 34-year-old woman behind the wheel, who had no fixed address, died at the scene. Her 26-year-old male passenger was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The officer who was hit by the vehicle was treated for leg injuries and has since been released from hospital.
Meanwhile, a 39-year-old man from South Melbourne has been charged with possessing a prohibited weapon and theft of a bicycle. He has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on August 12.
Victoria Police confirmed that detectives, with oversight from the Professional Standards Command, are continuing to investigate the incident—standard procedure for all fatal police shootings.
Wayne Gatt, secretary of the Police Association of Victoria, said the outcome could have been even more tragic. “A slight shift in direction and this could have ended much worse,” he said. He added that support was being provided to all officers involved.
Community Reacts with Shock
Local resident Alan Nightingale said he heard loud bangs but didn’t realise they were gunshots until he stepped outside.
“When I came down, you could still smell the gunfire in the air,” he said. “It’s pretty unsettling to hear gunshots on your street.”
Another resident, Matt Ellul, said he cautiously left his house after hearing the shots and saw the aftermath. He described South Melbourne as generally “a good place” but acknowledged the area could be “pretty rough.”
Victorian government minister Steve Dimopoulos called the situation deeply distressing.
“Our thoughts are with the senior constable, his family, and also the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life. This is truly a tragic situation,” he said.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
