Kamala Harris recalls Wall Street confrontation during Gold Coast speech

Kamala Harris shared insights from a dramatic encounter with a top Wall Street banker during her keynote at a major real estate conference on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Four months after stepping down as U.S. Vice President following her loss to Donald Trump in the most recent election, Harris remains active in the public sphere. In April, she made headlines with a pointed speech accusing her successor of betraying core American values. She has also commented on current events, congratulating Pope Leo XIV on his appointment and wishing former President Joe Biden a swift recovery after his prostate cancer diagnosis.

However, her appearance at the Australian Real Estate Conference (AREC25) came as a surprise to many. During her fireside chat, Harris reflected on the intersection of politics and real estate, specifically recalling her time as California’s attorney-general when she rejected a $4 billion settlement offer from major banks over flawed mortgage practices.

At the time, her team encouraged her to accept the deal, as California was grappling with a major foreclosure crisis following the 2008 property market collapse. But Harris said she refused to settle for less than Californians deserved.

“I don’t hear no. I eat no for breakfast,” she told the audience.

She recounted a tense exchange with JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who called her and angrily accused her of trying to “steal from my shareholders.”

“I said, ‘You are trying to steal from my homeowners in California,’” Harris recalled, drawing applause.

Ultimately, Harris said her persistence led to a stronger deal, and she credited thorough preparation as the foundation of successful negotiation.

Rumors continue to circulate about her political future. Rather than seeking a second shot at the White House, Harris is reportedly considering a run for California governor. With current Governor Gavin Newsom facing backlash over crime and disaster management, Harris could emerge as the leading Democratic contender in a gubernatorial race—unlike the crowded field she would face in a presidential bid.
