Northern Victorian School Staff Member Charged Over Alleged Child Abuse Material

Parents at a primary school in northern Victoria have been notified that a staff member has been charged with allegedly possessing child abuse material.

Daniel Gommers, a 38-year-old former education support worker at Mooroopna Primary School, faces a charge of possessing or controlling child abuse material for use via a carriage service.

The charge follows a police search of Gommers’ Shepparton home in May. Authorities allege the offenses occurred between 2023 and 2025.

According to the ABC, Mr. Gommers was suspended from his role at the school after the charge was laid.

Principal Karen Goodwin issued a letter to parents this week, calling the situation “difficult news to share.” She stated that Gommers is currently barred from working at any school in Victoria.

“The matter is before the court, and at this stage, there is no information indicating the charge involves any current or former students of our school,” the letter read.

The Department of Education also released a statement, noting that the school took immediate child safety measures upon learning of the charge. “We are working closely with the school to ensure the community is fully supported,” the department said.

Gommers appeared in the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on May 26 and was granted bail. He is scheduled to return to court in October.
