Three Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow in the early hours on Sunday, injuring one person and prompting a temporary closure for traffic of one of four airports around the Russian capital, Russian authorities said.

It was the fourth such attempt on the capital region this month, and the third this week, adding to worries about Moscow’s vulnerability to strikes as Russia’s war in Ukraine enters its 18th month.

The Russian Defense Ministry called the incident a “attempted terrorist attack by the Kyiv regime” and said three drones were used to target the city. One was shot down by air defense systems in the Moscow area, and two others were jammed. Those two collided in the capital’s Moscow City commercial sector.

Photos from the site revealed a skyscraper’s exterior damaged on one floor. The incident “insignificantly damaged” the outsides of two buildings in the Moscow City area, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. According to emergency officials, a security guard was hurt, according to Russia’s state news outlet Tass.

According to Tass, no flights entered or exited Vnukovo airport on the city’s southern outskirts for approximately an hour, and the air space over Moscow and the surrounding territories was temporarily blocked to all aircraft. These constraints have since been lifted.

Authorities in Moscow have also closed a street near the collision site in the Moscow City area to traffic.

There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian officials, who rarely if ever take responsibility for attacks on Russian soil.
