Australia’s women’s basketball team, the Opals, secured their first-ever Asia Cup title by defeating reigning champions Japan 88-79 in a thrilling final.
Playing in Shenzhen, China, the Opals led after every quarter in the gold medal match, sealing a victory that also secures Australia’s qualification for next year’s World Cup in Germany.
The Opals completed the tournament undefeated, winning all five games, including an 86-73 semifinal victory against Korea.
In the bronze medal match, China convincingly defeated Korea, 101-66.
Australia established a solid early lead, holding a 9-point advantage at the end of the first quarter and extending it to 11 by halftime. Japan narrowed the gap to 8 points heading into the final quarter.
Though Japan managed to level the score twice in the last quarter, Australia held firm, surpassing their previous best finish of silver from 2017.
Coach Paul Goriss commended his team’s exceptional performance against the strong Japanese squad, who have won the Asia Cup six times.
“Our tempo and execution, particularly defensively, was among our best in the tournament,” he said. “Everyone contributed, and I’m incredibly proud of the team’s efforts throughout the entire week.”
The Opals demonstrated balanced scoring, with Alexandra Fowler leading with 15 points, followed by Alex Wilson’s 14 and Stephanie Reid’s 13.
For Japan, Kokoro Tanaka scored a game-high 21 points, while Yuki Miyazawa added 18.
Defensively, Courtney Woods and Cayla George each secured five steals, with Wilson contributing six rebounds.
Fowler was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, averaging 11.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
Fowler and Reid were both named to the tournament’s All-Star Five alongside Tanaka from Japan, Park Ji Hyun from Korea, and Han Xu from China.
Fowler shared her excitement following the match, saying, “It was amazing to represent Australia on this stage, playing in front of a great crowd. This group of players and our coaching staff made this tournament incredibly enjoyable, and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Australia also achieved podium success at the FIBA Women’s Under-19 World Cup in Czechia, where the Gems earned silver after an 88-76 defeat by the United States, who secured their fourth consecutive title.
