A powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake has struck southwestern Japan, causing widespread damage, collapsing buildings and trapping people inside a shopping centre in Kumamoto Prefecture.
The earthquake triggered severe shaking across the region, with emergency services responding to reports of collapsed structures, fires and damaged infrastructure. A major incident occurred at Aeon Mall in Kashima, where part of the shopping complex collapsed after the quake, leaving multiple people trapped inside.
Authorities reported that the situation became more serious after an explosion was reported at the shopping centre following the earthquake. Officials suspect a possible gas leak may have contributed to the blast, although investigations are continuing.
Rescue teams, including emergency workers and Japan’s Self-Defense Force personnel, were deployed to search through damaged buildings and assist survivors. The disaster response has been complicated by aftershocks, power disruptions and difficult conditions in affected areas.
