Princess Catherine Shares Insight on Her Cancer Journey, Describes Treatment as a ‘Roller-Coaster’

The Princess of Wales has opened up further about her experience with cancer treatment, likening it to an emotional “roller-coaster” during conversations with patients at a hospital in Eastern England.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, recently confirmed she is in remission, sharing the news in a social media post. She first announced her diagnosis in March last year, after doctors discovered a form of cancer during testing following major abdominal surgery.

Although the specific type of cancer has not been publicly disclosed, the 43-year-old completed her treatment in September. She later revealed that she had entered remission earlier this year.

Speaking with staff and patients at Colchester Hospital, the princess reflected on the challenges of recovery:
“You put on a brave face and show stoicism throughout treatment, and once it’s over you feel like you can get back to normal—but in reality, the period that follows is incredibly tough.”

She emphasized that the impact of cancer is far-reaching, describing the experience as “life-changing” not just for patients but for their families as well. “It’s a roller-coaster, not one smooth plain,” she remarked.

The princess highlighted the importance of post-treatment support, acknowledging that many patients, though no longer under clinical care, continue to struggle with returning to everyday life.
“Having someone to talk to and guide you through that stage after treatment is really valuable,” she added.

Since her return to royal duties this year, Princess Catherine has resumed select public engagements, although she was notably absent from the Royal Ascot on June 18.

During her hospital visit, she took part in planting pink roses—now officially named “Catherine’s Rose” by the Royal Horticultural Society—in the facility’s Wellbeing Garden. These flowers were donated as part of a wider initiative to bring healing green spaces to healthcare locations across the UK.

According to People magazine, her next public appearance is expected during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the UK, where she will join other senior royals.

Other members of the royal family are also contending with health issues. King Charles III announced last year he was undergoing treatment for an unspecified cancer and has since resumed public engagements, including visits to Australia and Samoa in October.
Meanwhile, Queen Camilla, who missed several appearances due to a chest infection late last year, has now returned to her royal duties.
