Violent Pokémon Card Theft in Wollongong Raises Concerns Over Collectibles Market Security
A police investigation is underway after a rare Pokémon card worth $8,000 was violently stolen during a car park trade in Warilla, a suburb south of Wollongong. The incident, which took place on the evening of March 28, involved a 38-year-old man who was assaulted during the planned sale of the collectible item.
Authorities have released an image of a red Ford Mustang with a grey stripe, believed to have been used by the offender to flee the scene. The stolen item was identified as a 1999 Charizard Holo Unlimited card graded nine—a high-level rating that could push its value well beyond the reported $8,000.
Jayden Gock, owner of Chatswood’s Onestoppokeshop, said he wasn’t shocked by the card’s high value, noting the growing trend of high-grade cards commanding premium prices. He also highlighted a rise in thefts from trading card retailers, referencing a series of break-ins at Melbourne stores earlier this year that may have resulted in nearly $1 million worth of cards being stolen.
Gock mentioned that his own store has experienced thefts, including incidents during business hours, though the losses were smaller—around $300 to $400—compared to the Wollongong robbery and those in Melbourne.
Shane Hedges, owner of the Alien Hive store in Wollongong, added that there’s a flourishing black market for valuable trading cards. He said the lack of regulation makes it difficult to trace stolen cards, making it easy for thieves to resell them.
“There’s no proper tracking system, so these cards can be sold to just about anyone,” Hedges explained. As a precaution, he stores his most valuable cards in a safe, while a neighboring store owner chooses to keep theirs at home.
Police are urging anyone with information about the stolen card to contact Crime Stoppers.
