Solomon Islands PM Faces No Confidence Vote as Political Coalition Claims Majority
A newly formed political coalition in the Solomon Islands, which includes former prime minister Manasseh Sogavare and other key figures, claims it has secured enough parliamentary support to remove current Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele in a no-confidence vote scheduled for next week.
The group—featuring opposition leader Matthew Wale, political figure Peter Kenilorea Jr., and former PM Gordon Darcy Lilo—shared a photo and press release asserting that they now hold a parliamentary majority, with more MPs expected to defect from Manele’s government.
Mr Manele, a career diplomat who became prime minister following a period of political calm, has faced criticism for ineffective governance. While an earlier attempt to oust him last December was abandoned, speculation about renewed efforts has grown in recent weeks.
Australian officials are watching the developments closely, particularly given Mr Sogavare’s history of tense relations with past Australian governments. Canberra reportedly does not favour Sogavare’s return to power, though the situation remains fluid.
The coalition has yet to publicly state its reasons for seeking Manele’s removal, but local media suggest growing dissatisfaction over the actions of Deputy Prime Minister Bradley Tovosia, who resigned yesterday in what many see as an effort to stabilize the government.
Despite growing pressure, Mr Manele has vowed to face the no-confidence motion, which will be debated when parliament reconvenes on Tuesday.
