France and Spain are preparing for a heavyweight World Cup semifinal in Dallas, with two contrasting but highly effective styles competing for a place in the tournament final.
France have emerged as one of the competition’s most exciting attacking teams under coach Didier Deschamps. The defending tactical mastermind has successfully combined several elite forwards, creating a fluid and dangerous unit built around captain Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué.
Mbappé has led France’s scoring charge with eight goals, while Dembélé has added five. Olise has also played a central role by recording a tournament-leading five assists, highlighting the balance between individual talent and collective teamwork within the French squad.
France midfielder Adrien Rabiot said the strong relationship between the players away from the pitch had helped produce their impressive performances. He also suggested the squad had become closer after Deschamps temporarily left the United States to attend his mother’s funeral.
The players are particularly motivated because the tournament is expected to be Deschamps’s last as France coach. He previously guided the country to the 2018 World Cup title and has again placed his team within one victory of another final.
The semifinal will be played on July 14 in the United States, coinciding with Bastille Day, France’s national holiday. The occasion carries additional significance following racist commentary directed at members of the French team during the tournament.
Mbappé was targeted by offensive remarks from a Paraguayan politician, while former Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy faced condemnation after suggesting France did not have any French players. French midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery responded by stressing that the squad’s diverse backgrounds reflected the country itself and that the team remained completely united.
France have shown that unity throughout their campaign. After defeating Paraguay in a difficult round-of-16 match, they advanced to the semifinals with a 2–0 quarterfinal victory over Morocco.
Deschamps dismissed suggestions that France would be seeking revenge against Spain, despite losing their two most recent semifinal meetings. Spain defeated France in the 2024 European Championship and again in the 2025 UEFA Nations League.
Spain’s route to the final four has been less spectacular but equally effective. Coach Luis de la Fuente has built a disciplined team capable of controlling possession, defending strongly and finding solutions during difficult moments.
De la Fuente compared Spain’s campaign to the philosophy of the Roman Empire, quoting Julius Caesar as he explained that significant achievements require sacrifice and suffering. He told his players that they must be prepared to endure difficult periods to reach the World Cup final.
Spain began the tournament with a goalless draw against Cape Verde and have occasionally struggled to convert their dominance into goals. However, substitute Mikel Merino has become an important match-winner after scoring in two consecutive knockout games.
La Roja have recorded more possession than any other team at the tournament and have also produced one of its strongest defensive records. They conceded only once during their 2–1 quarterfinal victory over Belgium.
Midfielder Álex Baena said Spain would need to deliver an almost perfect performance against France. He believes maintaining possession will be essential because France’s powerful attacking players could be less effective when denied the ball.
Attention will also focus on Spanish teenager Lamine Yamal, who celebrated his 19th birthday before the semifinal. Despite scoring only once during the tournament, Yamal said he was not feeling pressure to improve his goal tally.
De la Fuente predicted that Yamal’s defining moment at the World Cup was still to come, potentially against France or in the final should Spain qualify.
Yamal also rejected suggestions that Spain should fear its opponent. He said the reigning European champions respected France but were confident enough not to be intimidated by any team.
France will enter the semifinal with greater attacking firepower, while Spain will rely on possession, defensive organisation and resilience. With both European powers believing they have the qualities required to win, the Dallas encounter promises to be one of the tournament’s most compelling matches.
