Queensland’s coroner will investigate the “bizarre” death of Lauren Flanigan, who was under guard at one of the state’s most secure prisons.
Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre in Wacol houses female inmates accused of serious crimes.
Ms. Flanigan arrived at the centre on Thursday, charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter, Sophia Rose, who was found stabbed at their Moore Park Beach home on May 26.
On Friday night, the 32-year-old was found unresponsive in her cell and taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, where she was admitted to intensive care and died on Sunday night.
The ABC reports that Ms. Flanigan experienced a medical episode while in custody.
Debbie Kilroy, CEO of prisoner advocacy group Sisters Inside, described the situation as “bizarre,” questioning how someone under regular watch in police custody and prison could be found unresponsive.
Corrective Services Minister Laura Gerber confirmed a full investigation into Ms. Flanigan’s death and noted the incident has been traumatic for the community.
Queensland Corrective Services is also conducting an internal review of management practices at the centre.
The Coroners Court of Queensland confirmed both Ms. Flanigan’s and her daughter’s deaths have been referred to the Deputy State Coroner.
By law, any death in custody in Queensland must be investigated through an inquest, although the timing for Ms. Flanigan’s inquest has not been determined.
The inquest will likely examine the circumstances surrounding her death, including the supervision she received in prison, and aim to identify measures to prevent similar incidents.
Queensland Police Service will prepare a report for the coroner about the deaths of Ms. Flanigan and her daughter.
At the time of her death, Ms. Flanigan was awaiting a court appearance related to her daughter’s alleged murder.
Police said their investigation was still in early stages last week.
Burnett MP Stephen Bennett acknowledged the community’s emotional distress over the case and expressed sympathy for the family during this difficult time.
