A deadly explosion at an exclusive restaurant in central Moscow has left at least three people dead and more than 20 injured, after a homemade explosive device detonated during a private gathering.
The blast occurred at a restaurant in Kudrinskaya Square, one of Moscow’s prominent central areas. Russian authorities said the explosion involved an improvised explosive device (IED), with emergency services and investigators quickly deployed to secure the scene and assist victims.
Officials reported that those killed included the woman believed to have been carrying the explosive device, a security guard who attempted to stop her from entering, and another restaurant guest. At least 21 people suffered injuries of varying severity following the blast.
The incident reportedly occurred during a private event at the venue, with reports suggesting that senior Russian figures may have been among those attending, although authorities have not confirmed all details. Investigators are examining the circumstances behind the attack and searching for possible motives.
The bombing comes amid heightened security concerns in Russia following a series of attacks and attempted assassinations linked to the wider conflict surrounding the war in Ukraine. Previous incidents targeting Russian officials and public figures have increased pressure on authorities to strengthen security measures.
Russian investigators have launched a criminal investigation, while security agencies continue analysing evidence from the explosion site. Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed responsibility for the attack.
The incident is expected to intensify concerns over domestic security in Russia as the conflict environment continues to create new risks beyond the battlefield.
