Woman Killed While Intervening in Dispute in Victoria’s North-East

A woman has died after being struck by a car while attempting to intervene in an argument in the north-east Victorian town of Yarrawonga on Friday night.

Police were told the fatal incident occurred just after 8:30pm on Hargrave Court, where two people were reportedly involved in a heated altercation. The 46-year-old woman stepped in to try to defuse the situation, but was hit by a vehicle as a man involved entered the car and drove off.

Emergency crews performed CPR, but the woman died at the scene.

Police later located the vehicle in Shepparton and arrested a 26-year-old man from Tatura around 2am. He has since been charged with breaching an intervention order and making threats to kill. He was granted bail and is due to appear at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on June 5.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

The tragedy comes as police also investigate another fatal collision in Shepparton that took place the night before.

In that case, a male pedestrian — believed to be in his 30s — was fatally struck near the intersection of Wyndham and Rea Streets around 11pm on Thursday. The man died at the scene and has not yet been formally identified.

Authorities believe a green 2007 Ford Falcon sedan was involved in the crash. The 24-year-old male driver, also from Tatura, remained at the scene and was taken to hospital under police guard. He has since been interviewed by detectives and released pending further inquiries.

Investigators are urging anyone who may have seen the pedestrian or the vehicle in the lead-up to the collision to come forward.
