Ukraine Eyes Australian Factories for Fighter Drone Production

Ukraine is seeking to expand its defence manufacturing network by exploring the possibility of building advanced military drones in Australian factories, as Kyiv looks to strengthen international partnerships and increase production capacity.

Two Ukrainian drone manufacturers have expressed interest in establishing production capabilities in Australia, aiming to combine Ukraine’s battlefield experience in unmanned systems with Australia’s industrial expertise and manufacturing infrastructure.

The move reflects the growing importance of drone technology in modern warfare. Ukrainian companies have rapidly developed and adapted unmanned systems during the war with Russia, creating drones used for reconnaissance, precision strikes and battlefield operations.

Defence analysts say cooperation with Australia could provide Ukraine with a more diversified manufacturing base while giving Australia access to advanced drone development knowledge gained through real-world combat experience.

The potential partnership comes as countries around the world increase investment in autonomous defence technologies. Ukraine has been working with international partners to expand drone production, including agreements aimed at accelerating unmanned systems development and manufacturing.

For Australia, the proposal could support efforts to strengthen domestic defence capabilities and develop a more advanced local military technology sector. Supporters argue that collaboration with Ukraine could help Australian industry learn from one of the world’s most rapidly evolving drone warfare environments.

However, establishing defence manufacturing facilities would require government approval, security assessments and long-term investment. Questions remain around technology sharing, export controls and how such production would fit within Australia’s broader defence strategy.

The discussions highlight how the war in Ukraine has transformed the global defence industry, with drones becoming a central focus for nations seeking faster, cheaper and more flexible military capabilities.
