Three people have lost their lives in a multi-vehicle crash that has shut down both directions of the Western Highway north of Ararat this afternoon.
The collision, which occurred around 12:30pm, reportedly involved two cars, a B-double truck, and two smaller trucks.
Police are currently at the scene near the Thomas Road intersection in Armstrong, and detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are set to attend.
One car driver was declared dead at the scene, and two individuals traveling in one of the trucks also died in the incident.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.
Another car driver was transported to hospital as a precaution.
Drivers have been advised to use a detour through Moyston via Ararat-Halls Gap Road and Moyston-Great Western Road.
The Department of Transport and Planning has warned that the detour could add more than 20 kilometres to travel times and urged motorists to allow for delays.
The Western Highway, which connects the Victorian towns of Ararat and Horsham, is expected to remain closed for an extended period.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage or relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
