Two people have been killed and several others injured after gunfire erupted near a popular street festival in Toronto, Canada.

The shooting occurred shortly after 8pm on Saturday, July 11, near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, where the annual Salsa on St. Clair festival was underway.

Toronto police initially issued an active-shooter warning and urged members of the public to avoid the area while emergency teams responded. Officers discovered several people suffering from gunshot wounds, with two victims pronounced dead at the scene.

Early reports differed slightly on the total number of victims. Police initially said five people had been shot, while a later Associated Press report said six people were found with gunshot injuries, including four survivors. The conditions of those taken to hospital were not immediately disclosed.

Authorities later confirmed that the immediate scene had been secured. However, police said no suspect or suspects had been arrested, and no information had been released about a possible motive.

A significant police and emergency-services presence remained in the neighbourhood as investigators examined the scene and appealed to the public to follow officers’ directions.

Salsa on St. Clair is a major annual celebration of Latin culture featuring live music, dancing, food and community performances. The 2026 event was scheduled to take place across July 11 and 12.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his condolences, describing the attack as senseless violence and saying his thoughts were with the victims, their families and everyone affected by the tragedy.

The identities of those killed and injured had not been publicly released. Police are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
