The new instalment is scheduled for release in 2027 and continues the story of Sora following the events of Kingdom Hearts III.

During a presentation at Disney’s D23 entertainment showcase, fans were shown a four-minute trailer that expanded significantly on the shorter footage presented a day earlier.

The preview introduced new environments, returning characters and gameplay concepts that suggest the next chapter will experiment with fresh mechanics while preserving the crossover appeal that has defined the series for more than two decades.

New ‘Coco’ World Revealed

One of the biggest announcements was the inclusion of a world based on Pixar’s Coco.

Series creator Tetsuya Nomura explained that the development team wanted to select Disney properties that could naturally support interesting gameplay.

The colourful world of Coco, which centres on music, family and the Land of the Dead, was seen as particularly well suited to that goal.

The trailer offered fans their first extended glimpse at how the Pixar setting will be incorporated into Sora’s next adventure.

The choice continues the long-running Kingdom Hearts tradition of allowing players to explore worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar films while interacting with familiar characters.

Sora Finds Himself Trapped in Quadratum

The story of Kingdom Hearts 4 will follow Sora after he becomes stranded in Quadratum, a fictional city inspired by Tokyo’s Shibuya district.

Quadratum has already been presented as a dramatically different environment from many of the fantasy worlds traditionally associated with the franchise.

Its more realistic appearance gives the upcoming  game a distinctive visual identity while opening the door to new mysteries surrounding Sora’s fate.

The new footage also showed the return of several established characters, including Donald Duck, Goofy, King Mickey and Hades.

Other original characters from the Kingdom Hearts universe were also teased, alongside brief glimpses of additional worlds.

Mickey Gets a New Playable Adventure

Another feature revealed during the presentation was a new Paper Mickey Mouse world.

For the first time, Mickey will become directly playable within a storybook-style environment.

The gameplay is expected to differ considerably from the series’ conventional action format.

Players will reportedly move through cracks in walls, transform into an airplane and solve environmental puzzles as they progress through the world.

The addition indicates that Square Enix is experimenting with more varied gameplay experiences instead of relying exclusively on the traditional combat and exploration formula.

Maleficent Set for Major Return

Disney’s Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent is also expected to play an important part in the next game.

The character has appeared throughout the franchise and has long been connected to some of its largest story arcs.

While specific details about her role remain limited, the presentation suggested she will be a significant presence in Kingdom Hearts 4.

Her return adds another familiar Disney figure to a game already balancing established characters with new worlds and story developments.

Franchise Remains a Major Disney Gaming Property

The original Kingdom Hearts launched on PlayStation 2 in 2002 and began a collaboration between Disney and Square Enix that has since expanded across numerous  games and platforms.

The series combines Disney characters and settings with elements inspired by Square Enix franchises, most famously Final Fantasy.

Sora’s adventures across interconnected worlds have helped the franchise develop a large global fan base.

Disney  gaming executive Sean Shoptaw said Kingdom Hearts is among a small group of Disney-related video game franchises that have generated more than $1 billion in retail revenue.

That commercial success helps explain the continued importance of the franchise within Disney’s wider gaming strategy.

Anime Series Also in Development

The Kingdom Hearts universe is also expanding beyond video games.

Disney announced that an original anime adaptation is being developed for Disney Channel and Disney+.

A title and release date have not yet been announced.

Nomura said he is heavily involved with the adaptation, suggesting the television project will maintain close creative ties to the original games.

The anime could introduce the franchise to a wider audience while also providing existing fans with another way to explore its characters and mythology.

Countdown to 2027 Begins

With Kingdom Hearts 4 now confirmed for a 2027 debut, anticipation is likely to increase as Disney and Square Enix reveal more information about its worlds, characters and gameplay.

The extended D23 trailer suggests the new game will combine familiar elements with significant experimentation.

From the introduction of Coco and a playable Paper Mickey world to Sora’s mysterious presence in Quadratum and Maleficent’s return, the next instalment appears designed to expand the franchise in several directions at once.

For longtime fans, the presentation offered one of the clearest signs yet of what the next era of Kingdom Hearts will look like.
