A 24-year-old woman visiting Western Australia has been taken into custody after allegedly causing severe injuries to a man in an e-scooter accident over the weekend.
According to police, Alicia Kemp was riding an e-scooter under the influence of alcohol, with a passenger onboard, when she collided with a 51-year-old man on Murray Street in Perth’s central business district at around 8:40 p.m. on Saturday.
Emergency responders transported the injured man to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The scooter’s passenger, a 26-year-old woman, was also hospitalized but sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Kemp was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
She now faces charges of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and causing bodily harm while under the influence of alcohol.
Prosecutors Argue Risk of Fleeing
Kemp, who will turn 25 on Wednesday, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Monday, where her request for bail was denied.
The court heard that she is a visitor to WA, and the prosecution raised concerns that she may attempt to leave the state.
The magistrate commented that Kemp appeared younger than her actual age and remarked that surrendering a passport wouldn’t necessarily prevent someone from fleeing by car, given the size of the country.
Kemp was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.
