Australia’s Dyson Daniels has been named the NBA’s Most Improved Player. The 22-year-old guard, who plays for the Atlanta Hawks, emerged as a key starter after being traded from New Orleans in a deal that sent Dejounte Murray to the Pelicans. Daniels, known for his defensive skills, took full advantage of opportunities created by injuries and other roster changes, becoming an important offensive and defensive asset for the Hawks alongside Trae Young.
Before the trade, Daniels was mainly recognized for his defense, but his offensive game took off, as he raised his scoring from 5.8 points per game to 14.1. He also increased his rebounds from 3.9 to 5.9, steals from 1.4 to 3.0, and assists from 2.7 to 4.4. His overall performance helped him make history as one of the only five players since 1973/74 to average at least 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals in a season, joining legends like Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Michael Ray Richardson.
Daniels’ standout defense earned him a second-place finish in the NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting. His relentless playing style, especially on defense, earned him the nickname “Great Barrier Thief,” reflecting both his Australian roots and his defensive mastery. With his impressive improvements, Daniels has established himself as a cornerstone player for the Hawks alongside young talents like Jalen Johnson and 2024 No. 1 draft pick Zaccharie Risacher.
The Most Improved Player award is decided by a global panel of 100 writers and broadcasters who vote after the regular season ends.
