A crime scene has been established in a Western Sydney reserve following the discovery of a body on Sunday afternoon, prompting a police investigation.

Officers were called to Irwin Street in Werrington around 1:15pm after a passer-by found the body in a secluded section of the reserve, located between sports fields and residential homes, and contacted emergency services.

Detective Superintendent Trent King stated that initial information indicated the deceased may be a “middle-aged woman” and that the body appeared to have been at the location “for some time.”

“At this stage, I don’t believe the body was wrapped,” Superintendent King said. “There were some items around it—clothing and other debris—but it wasn’t wrapped.”

He emphasized that the investigation was still in its early stages, and it was too soon to determine whether there were any visible injuries or signs of sexual assault.

Forensic teams are examining the site under Strike Force Dowerin, which includes local Nepean detectives and officers from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. The Missing Persons Unit is also assisting with the inquiry.

Responding to questions about the involvement of homicide investigators, Superintendent King said their presence was standard procedure until the cause of death could be confirmed.

“We’re hoping the post-mortem and today’s forensic work will provide more clarity in the coming days,” he said.

Aerial footage from the scene shows a police tent set up over a blue tarp placed near where the body was located. Superintendent King confirmed that area is also being treated as part of the crime scene.

“We’re keeping all possibilities open at this point,” he said. “I don’t have any details on what, if anything, is underneath.”

Police are urging anyone with relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
