China Urges India and Pakistan to De-escalate as Border Tensions Claim More Lives

Amid escalating military tensions between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan, China has called for calm and restraint from both sides. On Saturday (May 10), the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement urging both nations to avoid actions that could lead to full-scale conflict.

“We strongly urge India and Pakistan to prioritize peace and stability, remain calm and restrained, and return to the path of resolving issues through peaceful political dialogue,” a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said. “Both sides must refrain from actions that could further escalate the situation.”

The call for restraint comes as Indian authorities accuse Pakistan of launching direct aggression through drone strikes and heavy shelling. Indian military officials have reported that at least 22 people have been killed and many others injured in the recent attacks.

Al Jazeera’s New Delhi correspondent, Umme Kulsum Sharif, reported that the Indian army claims to have intercepted and destroyed several Pakistani drones targeting strategic zones. However, heavy explosions and gunfire continue to be heard along the border, and a detailed official statement is expected soon.

Indian authorities further stated that the ongoing military actions have not only led to casualties but have also disrupted lives and livelihoods. Thousands of residents from border villages have been evacuated due to security concerns.

The growing crisis has prompted international concern, with diplomatic voices calling for immediate steps to prevent a broader conflict in the region.
