Why Inside-Channel Runs Have Become the World Cup’s Most Effective Attacking Weapon
The 2026 World Cup has produced thousands of passes, shots and goals, but one of the tournament’s most influential attacking actions often occurs without the ball.
New tracking analysis has highlighted the growing importance of runs into the inside channels—the narrow spaces between a full-back and the nearest central defender.
These movements may not always result in a player receiving a pass or registering an assist, but they can disrupt defensive structures, pull opponents away from their assigned positions and create valuable space for teammates.
FIFA’s Football Performance Insights team has identified inside-channel runs behind the defensive line as one of the tournament’s most productive attacking patterns.
Compared with the previous World Cup, possessions containing this type of off-ball movement are producing shots at a significantly higher rate.
Off-ball movement is harder to measure
Heading into the quarter-finals, the tournament had featured more than 90,000 passes, approximately 1,800 chance-creating actions and 2,367 shots, with 280 resulting in goals.
Passes and shots are relatively straightforward to measure because they involve direct interaction with the ball.
Players who carry possession toward goal, complete progressive passes or create shooting opportunities can be evaluated through clear statistical outcomes.
However, football is shaped just as strongly by players who move without possession.
A well-timed run can force a defender to abandon an opponent, create a passing lane or provide a teammate with an additional second to control the ball and shoot.
These contributions are more difficult to recognise because the runner may never touch the ball.
Improved tracking technology is helping analysts examine those movements and understand how they affect the wider attacking sequence.
What is an inside-channel run?
The inside channel is the gap between a team’s widest defender and the centre-back positioned next to them.
In a typical defensive structure, the full-back is responsible for monitoring the winger, while the centre-back tracks the central striker.
When another attacker runs through the space between those two defenders, the defensive line is forced to make an immediate decision.
The full-back can leave the winger and follow the runner, or the centre-back can move away from the striker.
If both hesitate, the runner can break through unmarked.
If one follows, space opens for another attacker.
The effectiveness of the movement comes from the uncertainty it creates.
The attacker is moving forward at speed, while the defenders must communicate, change direction and decide who should respond.
Even a brief delay can provide the attacking team with a decisive advantage.
World Cup data shows a significant increase
FIFA’s analysis found that possession sequences containing an inside-channel run behind the defence are producing approximately 2.7 shots per 30 minutes of active playing time.
That represents an increase of around 34 per cent compared with the previous World Cup.
The difference becomes even clearer when expected goals and shot frequency are considered.
Possessions containing an inside-channel run have generated more than twice the expected-goal value of sequences without one.
They have also resulted in a shot 13.3 per cent of the time.
By comparison, possessions without that movement have produced a shot in approximately 5.9 per cent of sequences.
The findings suggest that teams using these runs are more than twice as likely to create a shooting opportunity.
Bellingham’s run helps unlock DR Congo
England provided one of the clearest examples during their round-of-32 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo.
DR Congo were defending in a compact, deeper shape as they attempted to take the match into extra time.
Elliot Anderson carried the ball forward while Jude Bellingham moved behind the Congolese midfield and targeted the inside channel.
Right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka was focused on England winger Anthony Gordon, while central defender Chancel Mbemba remained close to Harry Kane.
Bellingham’s run forced the defence to react.
Wan-Bissaka recognised the danger and pointed toward the movement but could not leave Gordon quickly enough to follow it.
Mbemba was therefore required to move away from Kane and chase Bellingham toward the side of the penalty area.
Bellingham received the through ball and managed to shoot.
However, the most important consequence of his movement appeared moments later.
By pulling Mbemba away from the centre, Bellingham created space for Kane inside the penalty area.
When the ball reached the England striker, he had additional time to position himself and score the winning goal.
Bellingham did not receive the assist, but his movement was central to the opportunity.
Runs can create chances without touching the ball
Former Denmark international Jon Dahl Tomasson, a member of FIFA’s technical study group, said the importance of these movements is frequently underestimated.
A run may not be rewarded with a pass, but it can still alter the position of multiple defenders.
Players such as Bellingham are particularly effective because they combine awareness with the speed and stamina required to attack space repeatedly.
Their movement generates opportunities for others even when they do not appear in the official scoring statistics.
The DR Congo example demonstrated how an aggressive midfield run can create room for a heavily marked striker.
Kane initially faced close attention from the central defender.
Once Bellingham attacked the channel, that defender was forced to leave Kane and deal with the new threat.
McKennie creates space for Balogun
The United States used a similar pattern during their group-stage match against Paraguay.
Weston McKennie assessed the positioning around him before making his run.
Sergiño Dest remained wide, while Folarin Balogun was marked by two defenders in the centre.
McKennie recognised the open inside channel and accelerated into it.
His movement attracted one of the central defenders, immediately reducing the pressure on Balogun.
The striker went from being double-marked to facing only one opponent and was able to produce a shot.
Once again, the runner’s primary value was not necessarily receiving the ball.
His movement forced the defence to choose between following him and leaving another attacker free.
Former Ghana coach Otto Addo described the situation as an impossible defensive choice.
If the defender follows the runner, another player gains space. If the defender remains in position, the runner may be allowed to reach the penalty area.
This makes the tactic particularly valuable against low defensive blocks, where teams place several players close together around their own box.
Switzerland demonstrate the wider effect
Switzerland also used the movement effectively during their group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Johan Manzambi initially moved toward the ball, drawing a defender away from the back line.
He then changed direction and attacked the inside channel with a forceful forward run.
Manzambi eventually received possession inside the penalty area and played the ball back toward Breel Embolo.
The attack continued across the box before Ruben Vargas finished at the far post.
The goal illustrated how several linked movements can destabilise an organised defence.
Manzambi’s initial action pulled an opponent out of position. His second movement exploited the newly created space and forced the remaining defenders to adjust.
By the time Switzerland moved the ball across the penalty area, Bosnia’s defensive structure had already been disrupted.
Timing and athleticism are essential
Inside-channel runs do not work automatically.
The player must recognise the moment when the gap is available and coordinate the movement with the teammate in possession.
Running too early can lead to an offside position or allow the defence to recover.
Moving too late gives defenders time to communicate and close the space.
The most effective runners also need acceleration and physical strength.
They must move quickly enough to gain an advantage and, if they receive the ball, withstand contact from recovering defenders.
Bellingham’s combination of tactical awareness, stamina and running power makes him especially dangerous in these situations.
McKennie brings similar energy from midfield, while many wide forwards use the movement to transition from the flank into central scoring positions.
Deep defensive blocks can limit the space
The tactic is more difficult to execute when opponents defend extremely close to their own goal.
A very deep defensive line removes much of the space available behind the centre-backs and full-backs.
In those situations, attackers may need to begin the movement later, use shorter combinations or first draw defenders forward before attempting to penetrate the channel.
Even when a run does not break through, it can still create a momentary opening.
A defender may step away from the line, creating room for a pass into the striker’s feet or allowing a winger to attack one-on-one.
The success of the tactic therefore depends not only on whether the runner receives the ball but also on how the defence responds.
Balogun among the most frequent runners
FIFA’s tracking data identified several players who repeatedly targeted the inside channels during the tournament.
Most were forwards or wide attackers, although McKennie was a notable midfield presence among the leading players.
Balogun recorded the highest number of runs into both inside channels.
Interestingly, none of his movements directly produced a scoring chance for him, despite his position at the top of the list.
That does not mean the runs were ineffective.
They may have drawn defenders away, created space for teammates or changed the shape of the opposing back line.
The leading players in this category were also heavily involved in their teams’ shooting and chance-creation numbers, reinforcing the relationship between intelligent movement and attacking productivity.
Modern analysis gives hidden actions greater value
Traditional football statistics have often rewarded the player who makes the final pass or scores the goal.
Tracking data allows teams to examine the actions that occurred earlier in the sequence.
A midfielder who drags a centre-back away, a winger who pulls a full-back toward the touchline or a striker who runs across the defensive line may be just as important as the player credited with the assist.
This information can influence coaching, scouting and tactical preparation.
Teams can identify which players consistently create space without the ball and design attacking patterns around those movements.
Defenders can also study how opponents use the channels and improve communication between centre-backs and full-backs.
A tactical trend likely to shape the final matches
As the World Cup approaches its conclusion, small tactical details are likely to decide increasingly tight games.
Semi-finalists will face organised defences with limited weaknesses, making it difficult to create chances through passing alone.
Inside-channel runs offer a method of disrupting those structures without requiring an immediate technical action on the ball.
They place defenders under pressure, create uncertainty and give leading attackers more space in central areas.
The movement may last only a few seconds and may not appear in the official match statistics.
However, FIFA’s data indicates that it has become one of the most productive attacking actions at the tournament.
