Interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni has delivered a highly encouraging update on captain Sam Kerr, who is steadily progressing in her recovery from an ACL injury sustained in January 2024.

Kerr, who has been out of action for Chelsea and the Matildas since the injury, has now been sidelined for 16 months—exceeding the typical ACL recovery timeline. This prolonged absence had raised fears that the 31-year-old might not return until 2026.

However, Sermanni reassured fans on Thursday that Kerr’s rehabilitation is advancing well, with close collaboration between the Matildas’ medical team and Chelsea staff.

“We’ve got a full-time physio based in London and are working closely with Chelsea and Sam throughout her rehab,” Sermanni said ahead of Friday’s friendly match against Argentina in Melbourne.

“The knee is looking really good, and the feedback we’re receiving is very encouraging. She’s definitely getting much closer to a return than she’s been in recent months.”

Friday night’s game at Marvel Stadium marks the first of two friendlies against Argentina, as the Matildas continue preparations for the 2026 Asian Cup, which Australia will host.

Sermanni hinted that the match could be an opportunity to give younger or less experienced players more game time.

“We hope to include some players who’ve had limited or no game time so far,” he said. “It’s about striking the right balance while giving fringe players more chances.”

He also described Argentina as a competitive side, comparing their passion for women’s football to that of Brazil, though they are currently ranked lower.

Despite missing Kerr and fellow star Mary Fowler due to injuries, the Matildas will be boosted by the return of Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, and Kyra Cooney-Cross, who are fresh off a UEFA Women’s Champions League win with Arsenal.

The second match in the friendly series will take place on Monday, June 2, at GIO Stadium in Canberra.
