Norwegian Man Surprised to Find Cargo Ship Beached Just Metres from His Home
A resident in central Norway woke to a startling sight when a 135-metre cargo ship, the NCL Salten, mysteriously ran aground just outside his home on a fjord near Trondheim.
Johan Helberg only became aware of the situation when a concerned neighbour, unable to rouse him by ringing the doorbell, called him directly.
“The doorbell rang at a time of day when I don’t like to open,” Mr Helberg told local broadcaster TV2.
Neighbour Jostein Jorgensen had been jolted awake around 5am by the sound of the ship powering toward the shoreline. Alarmed, he rushed to Helberg’s house to alert him.
“I was sure that he was already outside, but no, there was no sign of life,” Mr Jorgensen said. “I rang the doorbell many times… and it was only when I called him on the phone that I managed to contact him.”
Hours later, the large red and green container ship remained grounded just metres from the wooden house, as authorities prepared efforts to refloat it.
“It’s a very bulky new neighbour, but it will soon go away,” Mr Helberg joked.
None of the 16 crew members on board were injured, and the cause of the grounding is now under investigation by Norwegian police.
