Victoria Police have searched a home in Melbourne’s south-east as part of their investigation into a fatal house fire that claimed the life of a 27-year-old woman earlier this year.
Officers executed a search at a property in Dandenong, seizing several mobile phones, though no arrests were made.
The victim, Katie Tangey, was house-sitting for her brother at his Truganina townhouse while he was overseas on his honeymoon. In the early hours of January 16, the home was deliberately set on fire.
Ms Tangey made an emergency call around 2am, reporting that she was trapped inside the burning residence. Tragically, she was later found deceased at the scene.
Her death marks the first fatality connected to a series of arson attacks linked to Victoria’s ongoing turf war over illegal tobacco operations.
Local residents attempted to alert anyone inside the house, but the fire quickly spread. Emergency crews responded to the blaze on Dover Street shortly after the alarm was raised.
Victoria Police have since launched an extensive investigation to determine who was responsible and what motivated the attack.
Detective Inspector Chris Murray said police are committed to seeking justice for Ms Tangey and her family.
“The least we can do is make sure those responsible for this tragedy are held accountable,” he said.
Investigators believe the home was mistakenly targeted in the broader context of the state’s illicit tobacco conflict.
Public Tip Sparks Breakthrough
The search in Dandenong followed a public appeal for information that prompted a tip-off to Crime Stoppers. The anonymous caller used a pseudonym, and police are urging that individual to make further contact and provide additional details.
“We know this is solvable, and we know we are getting closer,” Inspector Murray added.
CCTV and Suspect Details
CCTV footage from the night of the fire showed a dark-coloured vehicle, believed to be a BMW X3 or X5, stopping outside the Truganina property. Two individuals exited the car shortly before an explosion occurred. Moments later, the pair fled the scene in the same vehicle.
In April, police released a composite image of one suspect they believe to be connected to the fire. The man is described as Middle Eastern in appearance, aged between 25 and 30, with a slim build. The identity of the second suspect remains unknown.
