Valerie Mahaffey, the acclaimed American actress known for her roles in Desperate Housewives, Young Sheldon, and Northern Exposure, has passed away at the age of 71. Her publicist confirmed that she died in Los Angeles after a battle with cancer.

Her husband, actor Joseph Kell, paid tribute in a heartfelt statement: “I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses. She will be missed.”

Her daughter, Alice Richards, also honored her mother online, writing: “I’ll look for you in all the fun moments of life. That’s where I know you’ll be.”

Over a career spanning more than 50 years, Mahaffey moved seamlessly between stage, film, and television. She received two Emmy Awards — one for her beloved role as Eve, the anxious hypochondriac in Northern Exposure, and another for her work on the long-running soap opera The Doctors.

Her screen credits included appearances in Seinfeld, Sully (opposite Tom Hanks), and French Exit, in which she starred alongside Michelle Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer paid tribute to Mahaffey on social media, writing: “One of our brightest stars was stolen from us yesterday. Such a remarkable talent and human. You will be missed.”

Mahaffey is remembered not just for her range as an actress, but also for her warmth, wit, and generosity off-screen.
