Democracy Sausage Surge: Woolworths Reports 20% Spike in Sausage Sales Ahead of Federal Election

Australians are embracing the much-loved tradition of the “Democracy Sausage” in full force, with Woolworths reporting a 20 per cent jump in sausage sales this week leading up to the May 3 federal election.

The iconic barbecue snack has become an integral part of the voting experience, with sausage sizzles set up at polling places nationwide, often raising funds for local schools, clubs, and community groups.

A Woolworths spokesperson confirmed that the classic thin beef sausage has been the top pick for customers preparing for the election weekend. “Sausages have been extremely popular this week with a 20 per cent uplift as customers gear up for the weekend,” she said.

Political leaders have also weighed in on their preferred sausage styles. Opposition leader Peter Dutton prefers his with barbecue sauce and well-cooked onions, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese sticks to the classic presentation — sausage first, onions on top — as seen during a recent campaign stop in Punchbowl.

New polling by Australian Onions suggests one in three Australians would support a change in the sausage sizzle tradition — placing onions under the sausage instead of on top.

In celebration of the tradition, the Democracy Sausage team has compiled an interactive global map featuring more than 1,800 sausage sizzles and cake stalls around the world, from Japan and the United States to South Africa, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, and even Antarctica. The team is encouraging anyone running a fundraiser not listed to reach out online.

“People associate ideas and memories with sights and sounds, and there’s no better sight than seeing Aussie voters helping community groups while smelling delicious sausages and onions on a BBQ,” said Democracy Sausage founder Alex Dawson.

Even Aussies living abroad are joining the festivities. In New York, two expatriates took over a hotdog cart and rebranded it as the “Official Democracy Sausage Cart 2025” to offer fellow Australians a nostalgic bite of home.
