The death toll from the devastating flash flood that struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district and surrounding areas has risen to 95, while dozens of people remain missing as rescue teams continue searching through damaged communities.
The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers confirmed that 95 bodies have been recovered from flood-affected areas across seven districts. Authorities said the identification process of the victims is still underway.
The sudden flood caused widespread destruction, cutting communication links, damaging infrastructure and making rescue operations extremely challenging in several remote Himalayan areas.
Security personnel among those missing
The disaster has affected many government personnel involved in border operations, security duties and emergency services.
According to government officials, 85 security personnel are still missing, including 44 members of the Nepali Army, 28 Nepal Police officers and 13 personnel from the Armed Police Force.
Search and rescue teams have been deployed throughout the affected areas to locate missing people and provide assistance to survivors.
Hydropower workers and tourists missing
The flood also affected workers and visitors in the region.
Authorities said around 60 people connected with various hydropower projects remain out of contact following the disaster.
The Prime Minister’s Office reported that 391 foreign tourists and 93 Nepali tourists are also missing or unreachable.
Officials said the region’s popular trekking routes, border areas and infrastructure sites were heavily impacted by the sudden flooding.
Major infrastructure damage reported
The flash flood caused severe damage to transportation networks and public infrastructure.
Government assessments showed that 19 motorable bridges and around 40 kilometres of roads were destroyed or damaged by the powerful river surge.
Several communities remain difficult to access due to washed-away roads, damaged bridges and disrupted communication systems.
Rescue operations continue amid difficult conditions
Emergency teams are continuing search and rescue operations across Rasuwa and neighbouring districts.
Authorities said identifying victims, locating missing people and restoring access to affected communities remain the top priorities.
The disaster has raised renewed concerns about the vulnerability of Himalayan regions to sudden floods, landslides and glacier-related events.
Officials continue to assess the full scale of the destruction as rescue efforts remain underway.
