Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was fatally stabbed at an apartment complex in Newcastle’s Hamilton South.

Emergency services were called to the residential building on Hassall Street at about 3:30pm on Saturday, July 11. Police and intensive-care paramedics found a man, believed to be in his 40s, suffering from serious stab wounds.

Paramedics treated the injured man at the scene before rushing him to hospital in a critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.

Detectives, uniformed officers and specialist personnel from the NSW Police riot and homicide squads searched the unit block and surrounding grounds on Sunday. Forensic officers also conducted a detailed examination of the property as investigators worked to establish what led to the attack and identify the person responsible.

Newcastle City Police Superintendent Kylie Endemi said officers were speaking with residents and searching for witnesses who may have seen suspicious activity around the apartment building.

Police are also collecting CCTV, mobile-phone recordings and dashcam footage that may have captured the incident or movements in nearby streets. The area was reportedly busy at the time of the stabbing, leading investigators to believe several people may hold important information.

Authorities have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident, saw unusual behaviour or possesses relevant footage to contact police.

Additional police resources have been deployed across Hamilton South while the investigation continues. Police said they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the wider community and promised to maintain highly visible patrols in the area.

No arrest had been announced at the time of the report, and investigators were continuing their search for the person responsible for the fatal attack.
