Two men in their twenties have been arrested as homicide detectives investigate the death of an older man who was found unconscious on a busy street in Fremantle, Western Australia.

Emergency services were called to the area near the intersection of South Terrace and Douglas Street on Saturday morning after a man in his sixties was discovered unresponsive.

Paramedics provided emergency treatment at the scene before transporting him to Fiona Stanley Hospital in a critical condition. Despite efforts to save him, the man later died in hospital.

Western Australia Police arrested two men, both aged in their twenties, near the scene shortly after the incident. They were taken into custody and are assisting officers with the investigation.

Police have not announced any charges, and investigators are still working to determine the circumstances that led to the man’s death and whether the two arrested men were involved.

The Homicide Squad has joined the inquiry because of the serious and unexplained nature of the incident.

Detectives and forensic officers remained at the location examining the area and collecting potential evidence. Police established a cordon around part of South Terrace and nearby streets while the investigation continued.

The closure affected traffic through the popular Fremantle precinct and temporarily disrupted access to some surrounding businesses.

Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased man. A post-mortem examination is expected to assist investigators in establishing the precise cause of death.

Police are also reviewing available CCTV footage from nearby homes, businesses and vehicles as they attempt to reconstruct the events leading up to the man being found unconscious.

Investigators have urged anyone who was in the South Terrace and Douglas Street area at the time, or who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour, to come forward.

Members of the public with mobile-phone recordings, dashcam footage or other information that could assist the inquiry have been asked to contact Crime Stoppers.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have stressed that no final conclusions have been reached about the circumstances surrounding the death.
