Global tech giant Amazon has announced plans to invest 20 billion Australian dollars (approximately USD 12.97 billion) in the expansion, operation, and maintenance of its data center infrastructure in Australia. This five-year investment initiative will roll out in phases starting from 2025 and is expected to be completed by 2029, according to a blog post published by the company on Saturday.

Amazon stated that this is its largest-ever technology investment in Australia. The funds will primarily be used to install new servers and support workloads related to generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Additionally, Amazon revealed plans to invest in three new solar energy projects in the Australian states of Victoria and Queensland. The company has committed to purchasing more than 170 megawatts of combined power generation capacity from these projects.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese responded to the announcement with a post on social media platform X, saying, “This A$20 billion investment from Amazon Web Services will prepare us for the future, boosting our economy and productivity. It reflects strong confidence in Australia’s economy.”

As demand for generative AI and cloud computing continues to surge globally, major tech companies are rapidly expanding their infrastructure. Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have all significantly increased their data center investments to maintain market share and enhance their AI capabilities.

On Monday, Amazon also announced plans to invest at least USD 20 billion in a new data center in Pennsylvania, USA. Earlier in June, the company revealed it would invest USD 10 billion in North Carolina and over USD 5 billion to build new cloud infrastructure in Taiwan.
