After playfully declaring victory in the so-called “Vegemite-gate” saga — where an Aussie-Canadian café was told to stop selling Vegemite due to health regulations — Prime Minister Anthony Albanese turned his attention to Easter, delivering a heartfelt message to Australians.
“I want to wish everyone a safe and joyous Easter weekend,” Albanese said. “For Christians, the resurrection of Jesus Christ is a sacred moment, central to the faith.”
He acknowledged the many ways Australians might spend the long weekend — whether it be in quiet reflection, on family road trips, or organizing Easter egg hunts for children. “However you’re spending this weekend, may it be everything you want it to be,” he said, also thanking those working over the holiday to keep the country going.
Albanese, who has often spoken of the influence of his Catholic upbringing, also reflected on the role faith plays in his politics during a live recording of The Rest is Politics podcast on Saturday night. He shared that he would attend Easter Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, where he once served as an altar boy.
“My faith helped shape my social justice values,” he said. “The message of all the great monotheistic faiths is about caring for others. I said on election night that kindness is an Australian value — and I still believe that. It takes strength to show compassion and extend a helping hand.”
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton also marked Easter with a message of reflection and gratitude. After spending part of the weekend at the Sydney Royal Easter Show — where he famously met Hephner the alpaca, once known for sneezing on King Charles — Dutton emphasized Easter’s deep spiritual meaning.
“For Christians, Easter is the most sacred time of year — a chance to reflect on the life, sacrifice, and resurrection of Jesus Christ,” he said.
Dutton described Good Friday as a solemn time for contemplation, and Easter Sunday as a celebration of joy and renewal. He also nodded to the lighter side of the holiday, from Easter eggs and footy to backyard fun with kids.
Highlighting values like “faith, renewal and enduring hope,” Dutton said these principles mirror the broader Australian spirit — grounded in “service, kindness, compassion and grace.”
He extended thanks to essential workers on duty during the holiday, including paramedics, nurses, police, firefighters, and defence personnel.
“From my family to yours, I wish you a safe, happy and holy Easter,” Dutton concluded.
