How Israel’s strikes against Iran unfolded

What began as rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear program has rapidly escalated into a dangerous military conflict between Iran and Israel, drawing in regional and global powers and raising fears of a broader Middle East war.

Operation Rising Lion Ignites Conflict

On June 13, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a surprise military campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. Among the casualties were Iran’s top military official, Mohammad Bagheri, and several nuclear scientists. Iran reported at least 80 deaths and 800 injuries, while Israel cited nine deaths and over 300 injuries.

The strikes were preceded by warnings from U.S. officials, with President Donald Trump indicating deteriorating nuclear negotiations and ordering evacuations of U.S. personnel in Iraq due to rising tensions. Iran responded with threats, and shortly after Israel’s airstrikes, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed harsh retaliation.

Iran Responds with Missile Barrage

By early June 14, Iran had retaliated, launching hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones at Israel. Although many were intercepted, explosions rocked cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Civilian casualties were reported, including a deadly strike on an apartment building in Bat Yam.

Iranian forces also coordinated with Yemen’s Houthi rebels on the attack. In response, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned Tehran would “burn” if it continued to strike civilians.

Targeting of Strategic Infrastructure

As the conflict intensified, Israeli airstrikes hit key Iranian infrastructure, including oil refineries near Tehran and nuclear sites at Natanz and Isfahan. Iran, in turn, struck at Haifa’s oil facilities. Both countries claimed success in damaging the other’s strategic capabilities.

Global Reaction and Diplomatic Pressure

The international community has responded with alarm. NATO and EU leaders called for restraint, while the UN Security Council convened an emergency session. Pakistan’s prime minister publicly supported Iran, and Russia, along with several regional governments, condemned Israel’s strikes.

UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi warned that attacks on nuclear sites pose serious risks to global security.

No Signs of De-escalation

Despite global calls for calm, both sides appear committed to continuing hostilities. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard suggested further retaliation and floated the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz—a critical global oil shipping route.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Iran’s suffering so far was “only the beginning,” vowing further strikes against the “ayatollahs’ regime.”

As exchanges of missiles continued into Sunday, the conflict shows no clear end in sight, leaving the region and the world bracing for further escalation.
