Independent MP Zoe Daniel has requested a recount in the Melbourne electorate of Goldstein after the final preference count showed Liberal candidate Tim Wilson winning by just 260 votes.
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) concluded its count on Saturday, confirming the close result after distributing preferences.
“The full distribution of preferences in Goldstein (VIC) was finalised today,” the AEC announced on social media platform X.
“The margin is 260 in favour of the Liberal Party candidate. A recount request is being considered, and a decision will be announced when possible.”
Ms Daniel confirmed she had lodged a formal request for a full recount, citing expert advice.
“Given the slim margin and several anomalies identified during the preference distribution — including unusual fluctuations and significant vote shifts — I’ve taken expert advice and asked the AEC to consider a full recount,” she said.
“There are also broader concerns about the count that a recount could clarify.
As always, I respect the process and await the commission’s decision.”
Tim Wilson, who previously held the seat before Ms Daniel’s term, said he had consistently maintained a lead throughout the count.
“The margin never dropped below 100 votes, which is the threshold for an automatic recount,” he posted on X.
“The ballots have now been tallied at least four times, with scrutineering from both Liberal and Teal representatives.”
He criticized the recount request, pointing out that the current margin is well above the automatic recount threshold.
“The former MP argued the threshold should be 140 votes, but the current lead is 260. Now she’s asking for a full recount.
