Joash Papalii’s dream debut in the NRL will be celebrated across the globe — and it’s largely thanks to his proud mother.
On Friday night, around 150 friends and relatives gathered at Parramatta Stadium to watch the 20-year-old winger begin his NRL journey in memorable fashion.
A product of the Canterbury junior system, Papalii made an immediate impact in Parramatta’s surprise 30-10 win over Manly, entering the game less than 90 seconds in after Will Penisini left the field with a concussion.
Playing on the right wing, Papalii made his mark early by collecting a low Dean Hawkins kick and setting up Jordan Samrani for a try. Later, he scored one himself after receiving a looping pass from Hawkins.
His debut was a well-earned reward after weeks of waiting as Parramatta’s 18th man, filling in for Jason Ryles in all but one game since round two.
“I’ve always dreamed of this moment,” Papalii said after the game. “Watching from the sidelines as the 18th man and seeing the boys play — this is everything I’ve wanted.”
Papalii recalled becoming emotional when coach Jason Ryles informed him on Monday that he’d be making his debut.
“He just came out with it, ‘You’ll be debuting this week,’ and I couldn’t believe it,” he said.
“I tried to hold back tears. It was such a relief. I didn’t see it coming.”
To share the moment with supporters who couldn’t attend, his mother Margaret plans to ship around 90 custom Papalii T-shirts and hoodies to family and friends around the world on Monday.
“We had 200 made, not counting the overseas orders. There’s a whole shipment we’ll be sending out to places like New Zealand, Indonesia, Hawaii, and the US mainland,” she said.
For Papalii, having his parents there on his big night was the most meaningful part of the experience.
“All I’ve wanted is to repay them — my mum and dad — for everything they’ve done,” he said.
“From all the training sessions and long drives to taking time off work just to support my footy, this debut was my way of saying thank you and making them proud.”
